Prof. dr. Wolfgang Oertel

Prof. Wolfgang Oertel is Senior Research Professor van de liefdadigheidsinstelling Hertie Foundation aan de Philipps Universität van Marburg. Hij is sinds 2016 lid en in die hoedanigheid verantwoordelijk voor het beoordelen en toewijzen van subsidieaanvragen voor veelbelovend en vernieuwend Parkinsononderzoek.

Opleiding

Prof. Oertel studeerde scheikunde in Tübingen en geneeskunde aan de Humboldt-Universität in Berlijn en de Newcastle University in Engeland. In 1976 ontving hij zijn bevoegdheid als medisch arts. Daarna werkte hij van 1978 tot en met 1981 bij het Nationaal Instituut van de Gezondheid in Bethesda, Amerika. Hier droeg hij bij aan fundamentele ontdekkingen over het circuit van de basale ganglia. Zijn neurologische opleiding volgde hij aan de Technische Universität München. Als Heisenberg Professor specialiseerde hij zich in bewegingsstoornissen aan de Instituut van het Neurologie en Neurochirurgie in Queens Square London.

Carrière

Prof. Oertel begon zijn loopbaan bij het National Institutes of Health Bethesda in de VS en werd in 1991 Associate Professor of Neurologie aan de Ludwig-Maximilans-Universität in München. Van 1996 tot 2014 was hij hoogleraar en voorzitter van de afdeling Neurologie aan de Philipps Universität Marburg. Vanaf 2014 is prof. Oertel als Senior Research Professor van Hertie Foundation verbonden aan deze universiteit. In de loop der jaren was Oertel initiatiefnemer en bestuurslid van verschillende neurologische adviesraden, fondsenwervingsorganen en onderzoekcentra. Sinds 1999 is hij voorzitter van het Duitse Parkinson Competence Network en sinds 2003 de spreker van de Duitse Parkinson Studiegroep voor 40 gecertificeerde klinische onderzoekscentra. Momenteel is prof. Oertel vicevoorzitter van de European Brain Council die op EU-niveau ongeveer 170 miljoen patiënten vertegenwoordigt die lijden aan een neurologische of psychiatrische aandoening.

Specialisaties

Met zijn team heeft prof. Wolfgang Oertel een bewezen staat van dienst in translationeel onderzoek van moleculair experimenteel onderzoek tot klinische studies. Prof. Oertel heeft tot en met 2022 meer dan 800 peer-reviewed artikelen gepubliceerd. In het bijzonder zijn experimenteel en klinisch onderzoek naar de prodromale stadia van de ziekte van Parkinson (PD). Dit bevat een speciale interesse voor REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), het meest specifieke prodromale stadium van de PD. Als gewaardeerd wetenschapper ontving prof. Oertel in z’n rijke carrière vele onderscheidingen en prijzen.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Oertel

Prof. Dr.med. Wolfgang Oertel  is Senior Research Professor of the charitable Hertie Foundation, Frankfurt/Germany, at the Philipps Universität of Marburg. He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Parkinson’s Fund Foundation since 2016 and in this capacity is responsible for reviewing and awarding grant applications for promising and innovative Parkinson’s research.

Education

Prof. Oertel studied chemistry in Tübingen and medicine at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany and Newcastle upon Tyne University, England. In 1976 he received his license to practice as a medical doctor. From 1978 to 1981 he worked at the National Institutes of Heath in Bethesda, USA and contributed  fundamental discoveries on the circuitry of the basal ganglia. He received his neurological training at the Technische Universität München. As a Heisenberg Professor, he specialized in movement disorders at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queens Square in London, England.

Career

Prof. Wolfgang Oertel began his academic career at the National Institutes of Health Bethesda in the U.S. and became Associate Professor of Neurology at the Ludwig-Maximilans-Universität in Munich in 1991. From 1996 to 2014, he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Philipps Universität Marburg. As of 2014, Prof. Oertel is a Senior Research Professor of the Hertie Foundation at this university. Over the years, Oertel has been an initiator and board member of several neurological advisory boards, fundraising bodies and research centers. From 2011 to 2012 he was president of the German Society for Neurology. Since 1999 he has been the chairperson of the German Parkinson’s Competence Network and since 2003 the speaker of the German Parkinson’s Study Group for 40 certified clinical research centers. Currently, Prof. Oertel is President of the European Brain Council (EBC) representing at EU level about 170 million patients suffering from a neurological or psychiatric disorder.

Specializations

With his team, Prof. Oertel has a proven track record in translational research from molecular experimental research to clinical trials. By 2022 Prof. Oertal has published more than 800 peer reviewed articles. In particular, since 2005, Prof. Oertel and his team have been conducting experimental and clinical research on the prodromal stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This includes a special interest in REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), the most specific prodromal stage of PD. An esteemed scientist, Prof. Oertel received many honors and awards during his rich career.
